New technology can expand LED lighting, cutting energy use and greenhouse gas emissions

Highly efficient, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) could slash the world's electricity consumption. They are already sold in stores, but more widespread adoption of the technology has been hindered by high costs due to limited availability of raw materials and difficulties in achieving acceptable light quality. But researchers will report today that they have overcome these obstacles and have developed a less expensive, more sustainable white LED.

Twin paradox on a chip

Per Delsing and his team want to combine theoretical calculations with experiments on superconducting circuits to gain an understanding of how things fit together at the nano level. Among other things, they plan to simulate objects that move very rapidly, almost at the speed of light, and demonstrate the "twin paradox" on a microchip.

Researchers set new temperature record for a superconductor

(Phys.org)—A combined team of researchers from the Max Planck Institute and Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz has set a new warmth record for a superconductor. In their paper published in the journal Nature, the team describes the process they followed that led to the record and why it gives them optimism regarding the possibility of ever finding a superconductor that works at room temperature. Igor Mazin, with the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, offers a News & Views piece on the work done by the team in the same journal issue, suggesting that the new record is causing some disbelievers to become more optimistic that the holy grail of superconductors will someday soon be found.
