New from Gretchen Rubin

Gretchen and Elizabeth - LIVEHappy August! I had a great summer adventure recently – my seventeen-year-old daughter Eliza and I went to London for six days.

We visited Windsor Castle. We walked around several museums, where I was able to feed my new obsession with color (we saw Jan van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait—that green!). We shopped. Mostly, we indulged our love for all things Harry Potter—we toured the Warner Bros. Studios sound stage tour outside London, and WE WENT TO THE NEW HARRY POTTER PLAY! Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is in two parts, which we saw in one day: we showed up at the theater at 2:00 pm, saw the first half, had a two-hour break for dinner (we ate and then went to Foyles Book Shop), then back for the second half. Thrilling.

For this trip, I'd applied my happiness knowledge: novelty and challenge bring happiness;  having unfamiliar adventures makes much stronger memories than doing familiar activities; and strong relationships brings happiness. My daughter will be a high-school senior this year. The days are long, but the years are short.

TODAY at 2pm Eastern I'm adding in an extra live discussion on Facebook. We will be talking about how September is the other January, start your new year right. Click here for the full schedule of upcoming live videos. The next one will be Monday at 2pm, instead of the usual Tuesday at 1pm.

Happier Podcast

In episode 76, Elizabeth and I talked about writing your own manifesto.

Our discussion about  "errand dates" in episode 77 also sparked a lot of comments.
A Little Happier: I read the short story that was read as part of my wedding.
My main argument in my book Better Than Before is: There are no magic, one-size-fits-all "best" habits; each of us must set up our habits in the way that works for us. Fascinating to read about Darwin's work habits. They would suit me well—but they wouldn't work for everyone!
Onward and upward,
Gretchen Rubin

P.S. Want to learn more about how you can change your habits? Read or listen to the first chapter of Better Than Before.
