Ludwig van Beethoven (Bonn, December 16, 1770 - Vienna, March 26, 1827), German composer of academic music (or classical music). He is considered as the main precursor of the transition from classicism to romanticism. His output includes piano gender (32 sonatas), chamber (16 string quartets, seven trios, 10 sonatas for violin and piano), vocal (lieder and opera: Fidelio) and orchestral (5 concerts for piano and orchestra, one for violin and orchestra, overtures ...) unique part of your repertoire is the great cycle of the nine symphonies, including: Third Symphony, also called Eroica, in E flat major, Fifth Symphony in C minor, and the Ninth Symphony , in D minor, whose music of the fourth movement, based on the Ode to Joy from Friedrich von Schiller, has been chosen as the anthem of the European Union (EU).
Considered the last great representative of classicism.(after Christoph Willibald Gluck, Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart), Beethoven managed to transcend the music of Romanticism, influencing diversity of musical works of the nineteenth century. His art was expressed in numerous genres and even symphonies were the main source of international popularity, impact proved significant mainly in his piano works and chamber music,
Beethoven is acknowledged as one of the giants of classical music; occasionally he is referred to as one of the "three Bs" (along with Bach and Brahms) who epitomise that tradition. He was also a pivotal figure in the transition from the 18th century musical classicism to 19th century romanticism, and his influence on subsequent generations of composers was profound. His music features twice on the Voyager Golden Record, a phonograph record containing a broad sample of the images, common sounds, languages, and music of Earth, sent into outer space with the two Voyager probes.
