Melania speech may have stolen from Michelle Obama

Within hours of giving a well-received speech making the case for her husband at the Republican National Convention, Melania Trump found herself at the receiving end of charges that she heavily lifted parts of her remarks from first lady Michelle Obama's 2008 speech to the Democratic National Convention.

Editorial: The banana convention

Republicans dedicated Monday's speeches to the idea that they are the party of law and order. But their actions on the convention floor that day proved otherwise.

Trump team flips four GOP delegations to avoid last-minute floor fight

Donald Trump's campaign operation isn't known for its organizational prowess, but it executed a last-minute whip operation that spared the presumptive GOP nominee an embarrassing and time-consuming vote on the first day of the Republican National Convention.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani got some of the loudest cheers at the opening night of the Republican convention with an emphatic speech touching on violence against police, terrorism and Benghazi. "We say thank you to the Cleveland Police Department for protecting us," Giuliani said, prompting the first of several standing ovations during his speech. The ovations included audience chants of "Ru-dy! Ru-dy!"

Trump surges among independent voters

Donald Trump has found new support from independent voters, which allowed him to close the gap in a new nationwide poll. According to a Monmouth University poll released Monday, Trump leads Hillary Clinton 40-31 among independents, a 9-point lead just a month after the same poll said the two candidates were tied among those voters.

On this day 35 years ago, French President Francois Mitterand alerted President Ronald Reagan to copious documents his intelligence services had collected regarding Soviet theft of Western technology. The revelation of the so-called "Farewell Dossier" resulted years later in the mass deportation of Soviet spies from the West, but in the meantime the CIA began feeding bad designs to the Soviets' espionage network in order to set back their technological development.

Kasich will back Trump on one condition

There is one thing Donald Trump could say to Ohio Gov. John Kasich to persuade the Buckeye State leader to attend and speak at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this week. "He'd have to change everything that he says," Kasich said in an interview that aired Monday night on "NBC Nightly News."

Airport strike looms for Dem convention

Democrats attending their party's national convention in Philadelphia next week may find their travel plans getting a bit complicated. Workers at Philadelphia International Airport have voted to strike during the convention and are holding a rally Tuesday to demonstrate that they are willing to walk off. That could be awkward for any out-of-town delegates who plan to use the airport since the party strongly supports labor unions.

Anti-RNC protests boil over, Trump supporters celebrate

Cleveland had been bracing for Donald Trump supporters' planned "Days of Rage" for months, but the anti-GOP protesters appear to have posed a greater challenge for law enforcement on Monday. Anti-RNC protesters were spotted leaping barricades and chanting, "Whose street? Our street!" In a different location, Trump ally Roger Stone's "Days of Rage" morphed into a jubilant "America First" rally celebrating Trump's rise to becoming the presumptive GOP nominee.

Ivanka Trump slams Bushes, Romney, McCain for skipping convention

Ivanka Trump criticized major Republican leaders for not attending the party's convention in Cleveland this week. "That's their choice if they don't wanna be part of the narrative, if they don't wanna be part of the future," the eldest daughter of presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump told ABC News correspondent Lara Spencer in a pre-taped interview Monday.

White House asks Supreme Court to rehear immigration case

The White House has asked the Supreme Court to rehear an immigration case that has the potential to protect nearly 4 million immigrants in the country illegally from deportation, Reuters reported late Monday afternoon. The Obama administration made the request after the deadlocked high court ruled 4-4 last month, keeping the plan from being implemented.

'Back the Blue' act introduced to protect federal officers

Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, has introduced a bill that would increase federal penalties against people who either kill, assault or plan violence against a law enforcement officer. Poe's Back the Blue Act is a response to the recent shootings against police. Five police officers in Dallas were shot and killed earlier this month, and on Sunday, three more officers in Baton Rouge, La., were killed.
