Trump accepts GOP nomination: 'I am your voice'

Donald Trump cast himself Thursday night as the protector of ordinary Americans, and promised to shield them from terrorism and self-serving elites who run the government corruptly in defiance of the public good. Accepting the Republican presidential nomination, Trump vowed: "To every parent who dreams for their child, and every child who dreams for their future, I say these words to you tonight: I'm with you, and I will fight for you, and I will win for you." He spoke directly to "the forgotten men and women of our country," saying to rousing applause, "I am your voice."

Ivanka Trump hails her father as 'the people's nominee'

Ivanka Trump attempted to soften the image of her father Donald Trump while introducing him Thursday night, lauding him as the "people's nominee" before Trump was set to accept the Republican presidential nomination. "In his own way and through his own sheer force of will, he sacrificed greatly to enter the political arena as an outsider and prevailed against a field of 16 very talented competitors," Trump said in her opening. "For more than a year, Donald Trump has been the people's champion. And tonight, he is the people's nominee."

The Republican Party's crisis of conscience

"If you love our country, and if you love you children the way that I know that you do, stand, and speak, and vote your conscience," Ted Cruz said Wednesday night. That word, "conscience," triggered the boos. "Vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution." Boos spread across the floor and into the stands. It was fitting that "conscience" would be the trigger word for those who have attached themselves to "Mr. Trump."

GOP congressman: 'Connections and contracts' make Trump pro-Russia

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., suggested Thursday that "connections and contracts from the past" have turned Donald Trump into a "pro-Russia" Republican nominee for president. "I actually really, just to be quite blunt, have wondered why Donald Trump and his team have been seemingly so pro-Russia," Kinzinger said during a discussion in Cleveland. "I hope that people are looking up connections and contracts and things from the past or whatever, doing due diligence."
Did you know?

On this day 100 years ago, a suitcase bomb at a Preparedness Day parade in San Francisco killed 10 people and wounded 40 others.  The parade was held by supporters of entering World War I. Labor leaders Thomas Mooney and Warren Billings were convicted of the bombing and sentenced to death, later commuted to life in prison. Subsequent investigations cast doubt on their guilt and they were pardoned more than two decades later.

GOP megadonor wants Trump to start praising school choice

Republican megadonor Betsy DeVos seems to want Donald Trump to start talking about school choice before she'll support him. Trump has yet to mention school choice much on the campaign trail, although he has said education needs to be done at the state and local level. School choice hasn't come up much during the main convention speeches, but DeVos, chair of the pro-school choice group American Federation for Children, said the discussion has exceeded her expectations.
