Good evening. Here's the start of tonight's briefing. 
1. The investigation into the Paris attacks pressed on after the presumed architect, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, was confirmed to have been killed in a fierce gun battle a day earlier. Officials linked him to at least four earlier attempted attacks, including one on a high-speed train in August that was foiled by Americans. The police broke down doors in towns and villages from Paris to Brussels, arresting scores of suspected militants.
2. President Obama's plan to resettle 10,000 Syrian refugees became the latest flash point with Congress. House Republicans, joined by 50 nearly Democrats, passed a bill hobbling the program. But some politicians, including New York's mayor, Bill de Blasio, stood with Mr. Obama on keeping U.S. doors open, while historians evoked the U.S. failure, now seen as shameful, to shelter Jewish refugees ahead of World War II — even children.
