Good evening. Here's the start of tonight's briefing. 
1. Turkey and Russia are promising not to go to war after Turkey shot down a Russian warplane on Tuesday — with no warning, according to the plane's navigator, and lots of warnings, according to Turkish officials. The countries' tensions extend well beyond this episode: Analysts say Turkey has been quietly seething since Russia began bombing Turkish-backed rebels in Syria.
2. Pope Francis began his first trip to Africa with a stop in Kenya. Though Roman Catholicism is booming on that continent, Francis has met with resistance to his calls for a more tolerant church. He also plans to visit Uganda and the war-torn Central African Republic this week.
