Good evening. Here's the start of tonight's briefing. Go to the full briefing. 
1. Pope Francis electrified throngs in New York on Day 4 of his U.S. visit, and pleaded with world leaders at the U.N. for compassion for all the people of the world. "A selfish and boundless thirst for power and material prosperity," he told the General Assembly, "leads both to the misuse of available natural resources and to the exclusion of the weak and the disadvantaged."
2. Oddly enough, one of the architects of the pope's visit, John Boehner, stole the spotlight with news that he would leave Congress. Hard-right Republicans reject the House speaker's leadership because he will make a deal with Democrats rather than shut the government down over funding for Planned Parenthood. The leading candidate to succeed him: Kevin McCarthy of California, the majority leader.
